- There will be a need for approximately 9,000 staff members
> - There will be a total of six villages. One will be for staff, one will b=
e for Venturing, four for all others. The villages (other than staff) will b=
e divided into four supcamps. None of the camps or villages will be based on=
regions. All participants will be mixed together, but the method how chosen=
was not discussed.
> =20
> The following is about staff only:
> - All staff except for very few subcamp staffers will stay in the Staff Vi=
llage.
> - Housing for staff will be four-man tents with two staffers per tent. The=
tents will be furnished and pre-setup.
> - There will be NO electricity in the staff tents what so ever. DO NOT bri=
ng fans, lamps, etc. Think of basic primitive camping.
> - Electricity will be available for recharging, but NOT in tents.
> - (assuming staff arriving by car here) You will park your car in a storag=
e area off site from the Summit. You will then carry all of your personal be=
longings that you will need for the entire time to a bus. You will then be d=
riven by bus to the staff village and dropped off. You will return to the pa=
rking area by the same method at the time of departure. NO PERSONAL CARS wil=
l ever be allowed to drive onto the summit property.
> - If you have non-personal stuff that you need to perform your staff dutie=
s, there are two methods of delivery - 1) You will ship it to a designated l=
ocation and the Summit will then transport it to the area of the Jamboree f=
or you ahead of time. When you arrive, you will then retrieve it and set it=
up. or 2) You bring it with you, you place it in a container that will be o=
ff site of the Summit, then that container will be brought onsite to a desig=
nated area within the Summit and you will retrieve it and then carry it (bes=
t you can) to your working site. (Personal note - if you ship it, it will be=
taken to your work area. If you bring it, you will carry it to your site fr=
om who knows where).
> - Dining will be at the staff area. Meal times will be greatly expanded. S=
ome breakfasts may be "carry with you" type. Example of meal times may be di=
nner from 5 PM until 10 PM. Snack area within staff area may be open 24/7. (=
They did not say if snack are part of fee or for purchase).
> - There will be shower and flush toilets. NO HOT WATER EVER. Shower stalls=
will have partitions for privacy and each will be divided into wet area and=
dry area. Shower activated by pull chain. Pull to turn on, release to turn o=
ff.
> - There will be limited laundry facilities. Again, think basic camping. Th=
e thought for participants is that they will only wear their uniform twice, o=
pening and closing shows.
> =20
> Following applies for everyone:
> - The Body Mass Index rules will be strictly enforced. If you are over the=
limit, your physician will have to sign a release that you are fit to serve=
. No other excuses allowed.
> - There will be no bus or other transportation available once on Summit pr=
operty. You WILL walk EVERYWHERE except when being transported off site for d=
ays of service or High Adventure trips.
> - The distance from the staff camp to Summit Center (This is an actual nam=
ed area) is one-half mile and a change in elevation of 200 feet. As a staffe=
r, you will walk this at least twice a day.
> - Someone asked if there would be Action Centers. The answer was that the e=
ntire Summit is one big Action Center.
> - Merit Badge Midway was not discussed at all.
> - It is the intent of the "Jamboree" to have WOW factors every day at 10 A=
M, 2 PM and 4 PM. These were described as Jamboree-wide events that will daz=
zle and excite the participants. Things like military demonstrations, concer=
ts, etc.
> - There will be six zip lines installed. The question was asked how many s=
couts per hour can use the zip lines. The answer was looked up and returned a=
s 1800 scouts per hour per line.
> - ALL areas such as zip lines are being designed and installed by recogniz=
ed national experts.
> - In years past, many staffers and others would stay in hotels off propert=
y and then arrive daily at the Jamboree to work. There will be no transporta=
tion available for this to happen at the Summit. Please, do not plan on stay=
ing off property, even if it is available (no hotels in the area as of right=
now). If you are on staff, plan on staying in the staff village. If you can=
not do that, do not come.
> - Temperatures. The temperature of the Summit was tracked on the exact sam=
e days of the 2010 Jamboree. Overall temps were 10-20 degrees lower every da=
y. (Note here, plan for very cool nights).
> - Handicapped facilities - The only area designed under the ADA rules will=
be the Summit Center. Although specific information was not discussed about=
who could be on staff with handicaps and where they would be housed, it was=
made clear that there will be limited facilities IF NEEDED, but the entire S=
ummit is not ADA accessible.
> =20
> Medical facilities:
> - There was great concern for the health and safety of the participants as=
this will be a much more "active" Jamboree and the potential for injury wil=
l be much higher.
> - Everyone will be required to wear safety gear during all activites. No e=
xemptions.
> - There will be seven helicopter landing areas throughout the Summit
> - Emergency vehicles are the only transportation allowed during the Jambor=
ee
> - Hospitals in the area are being contacted and are aware of what is comin=
g.
> - It should also be noted here that the entire area is very excited about t=
he BSA coming to town. The Police of Mt. Hope West Virginia have already cha=
nged their "patch" to reflect "The Home of the Summit".
> =20
> Troop equipment:
> - Each troop and crew will be furnished with all camping equipment needed f=
or the entire time.
> - The campsites will not be set up prior to arrival (except staff tentage)=
. All troops and crew will use the same style/type tents, stoves, cooking po=
ts and such. A video will be created and sent to contingents showing how to u=
se each BEFORE they arrive. Since all equipment is the same, subcamp staff w=
ill have replacement parts and knowledge of how it all works.
> =20
> Summit going Green:
> - It was explained that all building materials are being harvested onsite.=
All shower houses are being built from trees on site.
> - Shower and sink water will be filtered and then used to flush toilets, t=
hen out to septic systems.
> - Water will be carried by everyone in their own water bottles. NO bottled=
water will be on site in order to cut down on trash.
> =20
> Visitors:
> - Visitors and participants WILL NEVER mix. The visitors will have to pre-=
register and a max of (I think) 25,000 a day will be allowed.
> - Visitors will be given a mini-Jamboree experience but will not compete w=
ith participants for activity time or space.
> - There will be a cost per visitor. Although no price was mentioned in the=
meeting, a separate conversation I had discussed the price of between $50 t=
o $75.
> - At no time will visitors be able to visit with their son/daughter except=
in the designated visiting area. Visitors will not be allowed in the villag=
es at any time.
> - It was never discussed about visitors attending opening and closing show=
s. I got the feeling from the attitude that the answer is no.
> =20
> Visiting the Summit now:
> - It was asked if anyone can tour the Summit now. Mike Patrick said NO! Th=
ey have two crews working two 10-hour shifts at the moment and there are no f=
acilities to handle "tours" and it is not safe just to show up to see the pl=
ace. There are plans to give a one-time tour to Council Scout Executives thi=
s summer. Please, do not attempt to come and visit at this time.
> =20
> =20
> It is important to keep in mind that based on what I heard in the breakout=
session that if you have ever staffed a Jamboree at Ft A.P. Hill, this will=
not be like that. This is all completely different. Mr. Furst said that the=
re will be mistakes made as they are still learning, but that it will not be=
due to a lack of trying to do the right thing. Also he mentioned that there=
will be four "Jamborees" taking place at the Summit within eight years. The=
military has made a commitment to be a part of the 2013 Jamboree; however, t=
hey will be guests of the BSA this time.
