Skill Awards

Postby stevejb68 » Sat Jun 12, 2010 10:51 am

Just wondering how many of you remember the skill awards from the 1970's and 1980's. I remember earning them as a Boy Scout and teaching them as a scoutmaster.

I have recently been writing about the skill awards on "A Scoutmaster's Blog" found at http://www.melrosetroop68.org/blog/

Yes, I was an older scout when the "new improved" program came around. Campinp MB was dropped from the required list, you could become an Eagle Scout without having to swim at all, and you had to start earning merit badges to advance to Tenderfoot. Yup, real bright move.

I earned First Class right before Skill Awards started.
(Back when no merit badge work until AFTER First Class.)

Glad I missed them.

Was going though our Troop's storage locker a while back and found a "stash" of them.

The Skill Awards program was born during what some consider the worst idea in BSA history and during the period where the "outing" was taken out of Scouting (as evidenced by Camping and Swimming).

If you look at the requirements of the skill awards, the aim was the combine the previous T/2/1 requirements into a single earnable award and allow scouts to pick and choose for the most part what skills they wanted to learn (Citizenship was the only required Skill Award). The program also required MBs for all ranks.

They also had time frame to advance from T to 2nd and 2nd to 1st Ranks which were called "Progress Awards". You also had to "actively participate" to advance and have "Personal Growth Agreement Conferences".

The Eagle Patch did not have the words EAGLE SCOUT on it either.

This approach was canned in 79 with the new BSA Handbook written by Wild Bill Hillicourt.

To add to smtroop168's post:

The words above the right breast pocket were not Boy Scouts of America, but Scouts.

I earned my Eagle in 1977 without earning Camping MB...I subsequently earned camping.
The Camping merit badge I have has a green border (not required, at the time).

Definitely the dark days of Scouting...coming off the end of the Vietnam war/era.

It was Green Bar Bill Hiilicourt, not Wild Bill.

I am not sure you can blame Viet Nam on the decline of Scout enrollmemt. I aged out in 1971 and Scouting was still going strong. Enrollment nosed dived a few years latter about the same time belt loops were introduced. Coincidence?
