Can somebody date/info this older "Parvuli Dei Award"?

Postby pcrawford65 » Sat Apr 23, 2011 6:46 pm

I grew up a scout. It has always been in my family. I have always collected badges, pins, medals, as a hobby. At a yard sale recently I came across an assortment of vintage scout stuff, and included was a Parvuli Dei Award medal. I realise this is a religious cub-scouting award, but what catches my eye is that this medal looks unlike any other Parvuli Dei award I've seen. I can assume that it is in someway historical, or vintage, or just a wierd phony (although who counterfeits scouting awards I don't know).

My own nerdy fascination has me intrigued. If anyone out there is, or knows, a scout-historian or anyone who could tell me more it would be greatly appreciated. If you do, I can provide pictures via email. Thanks for the time!

Very cool...I'm guessing early 50's but let me check a couple of places out.

I do not remember the Parvuli Dei from when I was a cub scout so I contacted the Pastor of my parish who is also a committee member of my troop. He was on the National Catholic Committee for many years. The original design was a metal on metal award vs the current metal on ribbon.

As to the age of the award he sent me to a current NCC member who is the historican for the NCC.

His reply:

The Parvuli Dei was approved as a Cub Scout religious emblem in 1956.

Its older brother, the Ad Altare Dei, was approved in 1939.

Thanks...I know the dates and I assume this was one of the 1st medals but was wondering if your contact knew when the design was changed to the current one.

I got mine in 1968.

This picture pre-dates the medal I received.
