And it certainly wouldn't be responsible to do 1/2 the project.

Based on my discussion with the SM, Troop Eagle Mentor and CC this evening, the scout will be counseled to make the 1/2 a whole.

Thanks for all your inputs.

Congratulations. You have just assisted in turning a scout into a man. I hope that the lesson that he will learn in the process runs through the rest of his life.

How can a scout leader make sure that this does not happen to him:

1. Make sure that the scout works closely with his district-assigned Eagle Mentor
2. Assign a unit adult to work with the scout as an Eagle coach
3. Once the Mentor and Coach are assigned -- get out of the way

As long as there is adult contact (and counseling) problems such as the ones that occured in this case should not arise. However, there were too many adults interacting with the scout and weighing in with differing opinions.

cballman...I hope to get the Scout answers at his BOR.

mj...I think the too many adults in this case was the Scout's father. I sat on an EBOR last night with another troop and the board members were talking (not during the BOR) about their next project candidate and the Father's over-involvement already. Lots of "we're going to do this". I wished them luck.

sm168: Matt, is he getting close to his 18th? What is the status of his paperwork and references?

By the way, is that you on page 15 of the Fall Eagletter, NESA's magazine? If so, how do I get an autographed copy of the picture?

He's a HS senior now and I haven't heard anything from the troop. I'm doing another EBOR with the same troop next week and I'll get some status.

THAT'S ME! More importantly, that's my son. Send me your copy and I'll sign it but please make sure you enclose a check for how much you think it's worth and no I won't pay you.

Good Luck, Matt. Should be some interesting answers to the questions: "What took so long?" "Did you have trouble filling out the applixation?" etc. etc. . . .

Scout passed his EBOR tonight. CC took him to task more about the issue than I did. He said he didn't think it through and should have asked about cutting it off at only completing half of what he agreed to with the school.

CC said after the EBOR, it was Mom who "helped" him decide it was okay.
