SM delays SMC due to age and 100+ hour Service Projects....

Postby lifescoutforlife » Thu Jun 11, 2009 11:08 am

I traveled down near Pittsburgh to one of my fellow woodbadgers beading ceremony and was talking with another fellow woodbadger and he told me that the SM in his troop told a boy that he needed to come back and see him in the fall about his SM confence for the Life rank and went on the say it was because the boy was not 15 yet. If you think thats something they have to do a 100+ hour Life service project that has to be approved by him. And these requirements he has set for the boys has been going on for years. For the life of me I can not believe things like this still goes on in Boy Scouts.

Is this GPC, MT, PW or WF if GPC
Brother Evmori you might want to take a stab at this one.
If WF I will handle it
If PW TW will
If MT I will

This cannot be going on without complicity of many within the Troop, Committee and Council level personnel.

i really wonder what kind of boys would keep coming to a troop that was structured this way.

I think that national needs to send out their advancement policy to the TCC, COR, SM, and AC for each unit and have them sign it saying that they will follow it. This should be done annually so that they dont forget. I also think that they should put more detailed information in the scout handbooks explaining the advancement guidelines to the youth with contact information to report if their units are not following it.

Hear! Hear!

Include it in the handbook is best. That way it's harder to hide the information from scouts and parents.

OK We have one problem with this But here is another I heard at the Area meeting on Monday.
We are planning an all area camporee September 2010. There is one council that wants nothing to do with it. They were asked to at least give the troops the information so they could decide on their Own. This also was refused. This was on the Council level. WE will be by passing the council executive  and trying to get information to the units

Number 2 A council has been having Cub camping issues. Over the past several years they have been sending out Cub Camping information to the unit leaders. This year all the Parents got letters Camping increase 300%.

If it is Penn's Woods Council, I will personally walk this through to the re-education camp or firing squad.

Just tell us the Troop Number...............

That just plain SUCKS on the part of the Council and the Executive. If y'all need help stuffing envelopes, let me know. I will personally call every Venturer in the PWC and hold a pizza party to "get 'er done."

I hope that the Area and Region professionals are looking to remove the CE. Heck, I'll do the job for for one half the national average of a DE's salary and not take any benefits if it means a better program for the youth be served.

OK off my soap box. I had Scouting pulled away from me as a kid by bad Professionals and District volunteers so things like this really push my buttons and make want to hurt people.

I guess it was the reference to "going on for years" comment that makes me believe the council or district knows about it.

Ed...I'm not sure which way I would like that to go. :? Clueless or Have Knowledge. I just would think someone in the troop would have raised the BS flag on this if its been going on for a long time or the UC (if they have one) would have seen something.

It is being worked out internally. It appears that a couple of the parents heard about this discussion and read everything and now are doing something.
