Ronin says about Eagle palms
How could you fulfill these requirements without giving back to the program? Seems pretty cut and dried to me.

And is quite right, but I was not talking about eagle palms.

My point is the program is about helping the youth grow into responsible adults not to make permanent scouts or scouters.

The Eagle Ceremony does tell the scout it is now time t give more back than they got.

I would think that scouts in a GOOD QUALITY troop will be more likely to do this than those that get frustrated by a handful of adults that think they need to control the scouts advancements. Once you are out of the blue shirts, scouting is something that the boys should be doing for themselves.

I agree with that completely. It is part of the scout oath & scout spirit & if they really earned the rank, it should be ingrained in them. I just see it as being a larger charge than hanging out in the troop until they are 18. I also like to see eagles continue to take part in the troop in a meaningful way, but it is not a rank requirement that they do so. (for the rank they have already earned obviously)

The Eagle Charge covers it:

I reaffirm my allegiance
to the three promises of the Scout Oath
I thoughtfully recognize and take upon myself
the obligations and responsibilities of the rank of Eagle Scout
On my honor
I will do my best
to make my training an example
my rank and my influence count strongly
for better Scouting
and for better citizenship
in my troop
and in my community
and in my contacts with other people
to this I pledge my sacred honor.

Wagion...any idea how many Ventures make Eagle? We had one out of 143 at our council's Eagle dinner.

I think we would have to figure out a different advancement track if all 14 year olds were transferred into Ventures.

We have several eagles in our crew. But our crew is largely tied to our troop so it may be atypical.

The eagle charge is not actually a rank requirement. It is sometimes not ever given. I really don't mean to get people upset about this. My main point was you should not hold up rank advancement just to keep some one in the troop.

I am not sure why I quoted myself. I am not that quote worthy.

Didn't say it's a rank requirement. It's a "promise" to give back to other scouts, not just for the new one but for all of us who are Eagles. Even our 1st Troop Eagle from 1946 says it at ECOHs!

Yep the Eagle Charge covers it, but the Eagle Charge is not required. Some Scouts don't want an Eagle Court of Honor. They just want the award.

These two are the ones who always participate in everything including Cubby Klondike, Cub Summer Day Camp, etc. They are the ones most likely to continue actively after Eagle. The guys who never do anything anyway are assisted in advancement to hurry them up (to Eagle) before they completely lose interest.

Cowboy...I think this is an insult to the SM and ASM...I know them very well and everything they do, is thought through...they would NEVER hurry a boy throught to Eagle!!
