A little Music?

Postby MisterChris » Tue Oct 09, 2007 2:52 pm

Just came back from an outing at a local camp where our Alumni from our troop were having a reunion. Our troop had one single scoutmaster from 1938 - 1990, and these guys come together every other year to remember him and fellowship.

I've been writing music for about 1.5 years now and decided to create an album for the alumni. It had the scouts in our troop singing old camping songs, and 3 songs I'd written myself.

One of the songs on the album (and another that I wrote for Cub Scouts) were filled with scouting lyrics so I knew I couldn't copyright them. I contacted the BSA and they are in process of copyrighting them, and have given me permission to post them on a website, if I wish, as long as the songs and their use, packaging, etc. uphold scouting ideals.

I think you guys would like them. (I'm not selling them to the general public right now, but you can listen to the 4 scouting songs I've written and our Troop Fight Song up on our website in a player:

http://www.troopole97.com

Or you can listen to them and download some of them at my SoundClick site:

http://www.soundclick.com/legaleagles

But I'd like to know what the scouting community at large thinks about those 4 songs...

I'm thinking of offering them for a download donation (I'd donate to the troop - not a 'fundraiser' but a contribution...)

So, give 'em a listen when you get a chance, and let me know what you think...

You've got a winner with "Turning Boys Into Men" ! Great song for a recognition dinner. Really enjoyed this one ! (tune your guitar for the final take though)

Sorry, big belly laugh here! - Guess I need to listen to it again. I already 'released' the album to the alumni. But I can certainly re-record since it isn't over on iTunes.

Will-do, and thanks for giving me some feedback! :)

No, but I've got it available for FREE download along with several other scouting songs at Soundclick:

http://www.soundclick.com/legaleagles

A couple of those songs I've also dumped up to YouTube as videos cut from this year's Eagle Ceremonies.

Hopefully both those links will work for you. The Eagle's Flight song starts out in the wrong key, So I have to jump it up an octave partway through. If you listen for a bit it DOES get better.

Many of the other tracks on the album I can't put up on SC or YouTube (not LEGALLY, anyhow, and I remember the first point of the Scout Law. Instead of putting the soft tracks on iTunes, I've considered putting the albums up for sale (hard copies) on CDBaby. But I'd have to purchase a site and a UPC also...

I've never whipped any up (no TAB either), but I can give you guitar chords: (from memory here, don't have my axe at work)...

Intro:
G C G C D

G C
In a weather-stained fedora with an emblem on the brim
G Em C D
With a twinkle in his eye, and a dimple on his chin
Em C
And a busload full of boys, they were on the road again
G Em
With a song sung at the top of their lungs
Am7 D G C G C
And on every face, a grin.

G C
Stopping first for gas, at the station down the road
G Em C D
A businessman stood by and stared as he watched the bus unload.
Em C
"Just what do you think you're doing!?" the man asked of him.
G C D G
He said, "I'm just turning Boys into Men."

C G
Oh, I'm just turning boys into men.
C
It takes patience, love and kindness,
Em D
And a prayer now and then.
Em C
Some don't have a Daddy,
Em C
And some just need a friend
G Em
And they all just need a hand up
C
On the climb ahead of them
G C D G
On their journey, turning Boys into Men.

"This world is looking for a hero, who will stand when others fall
One to serve his God and Country, willing to give his all.
A man who'll stand for what is right, and defend what is true.
Tell me, son, is that Hero there in you?"

One by one, he taught them, how to serve their fellow man
How to 'Be Prepared' in life, and give all that they can.
How to search and find that Hero hidden deep inside of them
On their Journey, Turning Boys into Men.

Chorus:

Unfortunately, proportional spacing was stripped out of that post, so you'll have to guess where the chords change...
