Anyone Visiting this Jamboree Will Pay a Fee to enter

Postby wagionvigil » Tue Apr 20, 2010 10:17 am

Just got an official notice that there will be a $10.00 day fee this jamboree to offset the cost of the visitors. Yes they cost the BSA. It will allow for more pota Johns and Clean up after the Jamboree. Anyone wishing to see this please email me and I will sent it to you there are Two PDF files.

You do get a Visitor patch when you pay.

jclark15461 ...AT... verizon ...DOT... net

Last Jamboree the medical expenses on the Visitors alone was unbelievable. This should also stop the local troops from attending every day to trade patches and cause disturbances in lines.

I think it is a good idea for those visiting to help offset the costs of their visit.

HOWEVER - In our jamboree contingent are several boys who have made varied travel arrangements and are not leaving the jamboree with the contingent, but with family. Does National really expect someone who is coming for 10 minutes to pick up their boy to pay $10 even if they really don't want to 'visit' the jamboree? I can imagine some parents/relatives/friends not being happy with this.

They better make sure they can even get onto the base to pick up their sons. There's no fee listed for the 4th, since the site is not open to visitors at all that day.

If they're picking up the Scouts on the 4th, even if they can get on the base, they may not be able to get into the Jamboree area until noon. Usually only the buses picking up units can access the subcamps until all the units have left. Even Staff can't get past the Archer or Wilcox Camp areas until noon.

Most the boys in question are planning to leave on Tuesday night after activities are done.
My wife will be meeting me and our two boys early on Wednesday morning.
The troop plans to be out by 8am.

In all cases, subcamp 9 is close to the public parking area. I wasn't expecting to have anyone drive into the subcamps to find their boys.

For the other boys, Visitors must leave by 4 pm on Tuesday. The families may have a problem staying until the boys can leave, or entering the base after 4 pm. The boys leaving Tuesday should not be allowed to leave until the troop campsite has been completely dismantled, all tents and equipment stored and ready for loading on the bus/truck, and the area policed for trash. Otherwise, they are leaving much of the work to the remaining Scouts, which is unfair to the rest of the troop. That could be quite late in the evening.

For your family, again, your wife may not be able to get onto the base to pick up you and your sons until noon.

I may up my ante to $40 if I can get a seat on our Council's bus that's coming for the day on July 30th.

How far is the walk for me to escort boys outside the gates to meet parents on Tuesday when they won't let the parent in to pick them up?
Will they let me back in on-foot?

You're talking "Miles" - Literally. Here are some air photos that may give you an idea of the scope of AP Hill and the Jambo area.

Here's an air photo of much of AP Hill: http://maps.google.com/maps?sll=37.0625 ... 43509&z=13

The main base entrance is on US-301 near Raymond's Fork, at the bottom of the photo.
Subcamp 9 is near New London at the top of the map.
Base entrance to Subcamp 9 is over 4 miles (each way).
Archer Camp (Staff Parking - Dead Storage) is 1/2 mile west of Acors Corner.
Wilcox Camp (The PX and some of the Barracks for staff) is the large area Northeast of Howards Corner
Staff Check-in is just south of Baylortown.

This photo shows all of the Jambo Area (excluding Wilcox, Archer & Staff Check-in) which is basically bounded by AP Hill Drive, Lee Drive, & Engineer Road, plus the open areas North of Liberty: http://maps.google.com/maps?sll=37.0625 ... 71754&z=14

And this photo covers just a portion of the Jambo area: http://maps.google.com/maps?sll=37.0625 ... 35877&z=15

Subcamp 9 is at the intersection of Lee Drive and Thomas Road.
The Arena is the large oval shaped area north of the Parking Lot and Thomas Road.
The parking lot is the western 2/3 of the open area just South of Thomas Road (the other 1/3 is MB Midway and the Indian Village). The lot entrance is by the "A" in AP Hill Drive. The lot exit is by the "L" in Lee Drive.

IF (and that's a big "IF") they let a car into the base, the closest a driver MAY be able to get is the intersection of Lee Dr. and AP Hill Dr.

To be honest, my suggestion would be for all the boys to stay with the troop Tuesday night, then leave on the bus in the morning, and have their parents (including your wife) arrange to meet the Troop bus Wednesday morning at a convenient place OFF Base, in Bowling Green or Fredericksburg. Then your wife could come in after noon and pick you up.

FYI they are not receptive to doing things like this they being the US Army. BSA Jamboree, Army Rules. ALso a point of discussion watch the speed limit closely. A traffic ticket on an Army base Is a federal Charge. They are very strict about speed and give no breaks.

See if this was the Navy, we'd load them all on Aircraft Carriers and head out for a Giant Sea Base experience.

No Federalis in WV!!! Just those pesky G2SS rules.

Our camp is the NW corner of subcamp 9 on Thomas Road.

Based on the legend of the last map you linked, the visitor parking lot is about 1000 feet from our campsite down Thomas Road. The intersection of Lee Dr and AP Hill Dr. is about 3500 feet down Lee Dr. The bottom of the map would still be less than a mile from our campsite. Is the gate miles down AP Hill Dr?
