The OFFCIAL Philmont Thread!!!!!!

Postby pipestone1991 » Mon Jan 15, 2007 2:54 pm

Alright, this thread is for all of us who have been out there and got the arrowhead patch. Anyone who wished to know more about anything about Philmont can ask questions. These can relate to gear, what trail to take, how many should you take, etc. Also previous Philmont goers I want to read some good stories so tell us what you got to tell/know.

Philmont

Postby riverwalk » Thu Jan 25, 2007 11:36 pm

Went to PTC last summer. A special treat for this fossil hunter, was going to see "T-Rex"! The staffer that drove me out there has lived there all her life. We chatted about all the different wildlife I saw on my visit. She said she had never seen a fox in her six years on the job......as one ran across in front of us! I told her she was treated to that because of her courtesy in taking me to the dino. Well, you asked for a story, haha.

Accually...I can answer this! Anyway, there was this NY troop & their leaders got really sick....Philmont sent every crew an email and we decided to take the boys with us (we met them down there), so yes you can if you can find a troop.

Philmont Games

Postby stevejb68 » Thu May 31, 2007 5:50 pm

"Many of the camps through-out Philmont are staffed These staffed camps include programs for the campers. Themes include Indian Lore, gold mining, rock climbing, and the life of a mountain man. If you attend Philmont you need to be sure to include these programs in your stay. They are both informative and a lot of fun.

There are also many campsites through Philmont that are unstaffed and without any programs. These camps offer the crew a chance to kick back, relax, and really enjoy the wilderness of Philmont. Of course, boys being boys, they only kick back for so long before starting to look for something to keep themselves busy. Exploration of the nearby territory will keep them busy for a little while. I would also suggest you bring a few games to play."

(from "A Scoutmaster's Blog" at http://melrosetroop68.org)

Just wondering... what games does your crew play while on a Philmont trek?

Some of my best memories of Scouting was my trek at Philmont. Even 25 years later, I am very proud of my Philmont Arrowhead patch.

One story was that our Ranger was a female from the Air Force Academy. First of all, our two adult leaders were Army and second, they were both enlisted. This made for an interesting couple of days. She also was upset with us because we decided to forgo the dining fly and we did not realize that this is what she intended to use as her "tent" on the trail.

Wow! Our ranger had to bring his own tent............however, he didn't bring food.........we offered him first helpings but he would only eat our leftovers.
