2010 National Jamboree

Postby wagionvigil » Tue Nov 21, 2006 1:36 pm

I highly recommend that as soon as they start advertising for Contingents in Your councils people start signing up for the Jamboree.
There are thousands of staff positions that both youth and adults can sign up for. But you must work so be prepared to do so.There are National Staffing positions and Regional Staff positions. The Sub camps and the Actions Centers are always in great need of staff. Members of Venturing Crews both Male and Female can staff the Jamboree in most staffing positions.
Youth staff is up to 20 years old.You cannot turn 21 until after the Jamboree closes.

I am seriously considering it, was on trading post staff at the 2001 Jamboree. Great experience.

I can tell you working an action center on Youth Staff can be a lot of work, but it is also a lot of fun! :D

Here's some good news!!!--------------------
Court: Pentagon Can Fund Scout Jamboree
--------------------

By NATHANIEL HERNANDEZ
Associated Press Writer

April 4, 2007, 9:01 PM EDT

CHICAGO -- A federal appellate court ruled Wednesday that the Pentagon can continue its financial support of the decades-old National Boy Scout Jamboree, which the Defense Department sees as a useful recruiting and training tool.

Two Chicago-area religious leaders had sued the Pentagon in 1999, claiming the Boy Scouts of America event should not receive public support because Scouts are required to swear an oath of "duty to God."

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the plaintiffs didn't have standing to challenge the 1972 Jamboree Statute, which authorized government backing of the 70-year-old gathering at an Army base in Virginia.

The appellate court reversed a lower court ruling and ordered the lawsuit dismissed on the grounds that the statute is not the kind of "taxing and spending" legislation suitable for a taxpayer to challenge.

"Even assuming that it is correct to characterize the BSA as a 'religious' organization, this statute is for the purpose of assisting the military in persuading a new generation to join its ranks and in building good will. This is a secular and valid purpose," the court wrote.

"We continue to believe that government funding to support private activities which exclude persons on the basis of their beliefs is unconstitutional," American Civil Liberties Union attorney Adam Schwartz said in a news release. The ACLU represented the plaintiffs.

Scouts from across the country gather at the Army's Fort A.P. Hill in Bowling Green, Va., typically every four years, for the jamboree -- a 10-day outing where the boys participate in canoeing, fishing, scuba diving and other activities. The military assists by providing manpower, equipment, cookie dough -- and cash.

The Boy Scouts received about $7 million in support from the Defense Department for the 2005 jamboree. More than 40,000 Boy Scouts attended, pumping an estimated $17 million into the economy in Virginia, where the event is held.

The Boy Scouts, who were not directly involved in the litigation, have said Scouts are not required to pray or attend church at the jamboree. The next jamboree is planned for 2010 to coincide with the organization's 100th anniversary.

A lower court ruled in 2005 that the Pentagon's support of an organization that requires its members to pledge a "duty to God" was unconstitutional.

If you are referring to where the 2010 Jamboree will be held, it will be held at Fort A.P. Hill in Bowling Green, Virginia as usual. Unless I missed a major announcement.

I searched the 5 councils closest to me until I found a contingent that would let me in for less than $2000 and less than 3 weeks time. I finally found one. Me and my 2 sons are registered and our deposits made.

It is a wonderful experience. I worked on the subcamp staff for 2005.

For 2010, I am toying with the idea of serving on the contingent, but will most likely return as staff.

See you at the Hill,

I just found out that one of our troop committee members was on staff at the National Jamboree in 2005 and I think he said he will do it again in 2010.

I am going to pick his brain and maybe we can split travel costs between us if we both decide to go and I am accepted on staff.
