Re: Do you need to wear a merit badge sash at an BOR?

First, do not wear the OAsash to anything but OA events and OA elections. The merit badge sash should only be worn to formal events such as Courts of Honor or Eagle BOR. I would not wear one to a BOR for any other rank. You can get a lot of good information ...

New SM looking for advice ...

... more meetings than he has attended in the last year. The other 2 Adult Leaders and I informed the boys 2 weeks before our Winter Banquet that elections were coming up and which positions they were eligible to put their names forward for. We got jumped on with both feet by our SPLs mother because ...

Re: Elections

Someone (in this forum?) told about electing the ASPL, who would become the SPL in six months. They're basically voting for the second SPL, who will have a breaking-in period as ASPL. That seems like a good process also, and it works in his troop.

Re: Elections

Is the appointment of ASPL by the SPL just a "guideline"?

Pretty much. :) It is in the Scout Master handbook, but they will not come and take your charter away if you use a different method.

Re: Elections

Congrats, but... Is the appointment of ASPL by the SPL just a "guideline"? We have seen it done many ways, but I'm wondering if the troop is supposed to choose their election method or if it's BSA standard? (Hoping YOUR election works better than our last troop's experience with determinin...

Re: Elections

We don't elect ASPLs. We have candidates for SPL, who must be approved by the SM, stand and address the troop to say how great they'd be. Then there is a secret ballot (each scout writes a name on a slip of paper and folds it). New SPL and SM select ASPLs (2). Other troop members place name onlist f...

Elections

Last night, I got elected as ASPL of our troop. The elections were rather hectic (the outgoing SPL said "elections are annoying as h***". How do y'all run elections in your troop?

Re: Unique Method for SPL (& ASPL) Elections....

We had this one for a few years too. It never really gained much approval though and was changed after 2 elections.

Re: Unique Method for SPL (& ASPL) Elections....

The method you describe meets the spirit of the national policy. The SPL should be an elected position. You can look at as you are electing an SPL that then under goes a mandatory 3 mo training program. The real truth is regardless of how you select you SPL; scout master appointed, troop vote, commi...

Re: Unique Method for SPL (& ASPL) Elections....

That's the way we ran it, too, except for this additional ASPL who was really either an SPL-elect or past SPL. There was at least one additional ASPL appointed by the SPL when his term began. Again, we are talking about a very old policy that I was only wondering about in regards to national policy ...

Re: Unique Method for SPL (& ASPL) Elections....

I may not be remembering things correctly, but I thought that the SPL was directly elected by the troop, and the ASPL (or two) was appointed by the SPL, much like the PL is elected and the APL is appointed.
